A Dune On Long Beach Island, NJ - Without Dune Grass To Protect It From The LBI Storms
|
Above is a picture of a "LBI Dune" near Lorry's Motel on Long Beach Island, NJ before planting dune grass. As you can see, the middle of the dune doesn't have dune grass to keep the sand from being eroded by the wind or washed away.
Eventually this dune will be blown away or collapse and the ocean will threaten homes, businesses, and possibly people's lives - unless dune grass is planted.
Volunteers below from Girl Scout Troop # 341 from Hopatcong, NJ are planting dune grass to protect the dunes and help preserve Long Beach Island, NJ (LBI's) beaches. Pictures of the owner of Lorry's Island End Motel and some volunteers are seen as they replaced the dune grass and posted new signs for keeping off the dunes to protect them.

If you or your group would like to volunteer for the annual "Dune Grass Planting Fun Day At The Beach" on LBI every October, please call Bill Hutson at 609-492-6363 or e-mail Lorrys@LorrysMotel.com.
After planting the dune grass, Lorry's Island End Motel provides A Free BBQ At 4 PM For All The Volunteers And A Raffle For 5 Free Lorry's T-Shirts.
It is VERY IMPORTANT for everyone TO KEEP OFF THE DUNES. The dunes are the first line of defense to protect everyone against storms. Walking on the dunes breaks down the dune grass and kills the dune grass - making it easier for the sand to wash away.
